J. Walton Newbold

J. Walton Newbold (1888-1943) was from a Quaker family, although he did not remain a Quaker throughout his life. He is best remembered as the first British MP elected as a Communist, as described in a potted biography on Archives Hub. In the context of the Foundations, he is most notable for addressing the War and Social Order Committee in 1918. He spoke on the subject of ‘Quakers and Capitalism’ and proposed the worker control of industry.
